liquorAccording to the Alcoholic Beverages Law, its is illegal to:

  • Drive under the influence of alcohol
  • Purchase and consume alcohol if holding a residence permit but not liquor license
  • Obtain alcoholic beverages from places other than those permitted by the law
  • Exceed the monetary limit imposed by the license
  • Obtain alcoholic beverages if under the age of 18 or suply alcohol to those under 18

Even if you have a liquor license, you should be aware that:

  • The liquor license is only a buying permit and it gives no umminity against any alcohol related criminal offence.
  • The alcoholic beverages law states that anyone arrested for being drunk in a public place, and found guilty by a court of law, could receive a custodial sentence of not less than two months and not more than one year. They may also be fined AED 500 or more. Any other offense or crime committed while drunk will be heard separately.

The license is valid only in the issuing emirates. And some specific rules apply, including:

  • The license should be given to an unauthorized person
  • The license holder must keep the alcohol for his personal consumption and not sell or give the alcohol to a third party. If the holder breaks this rule, their license may be considered cancelled.
  • It is the duty of the license holder to ensure that the value of alcoholic beverages purchased is endorsed, by the seller, on the actual license.
  • The license holder must report any loss or theft of the license.

All this rules must be followed by every resident living here in Abu Dhabi or else they will be jail. So, beware on it if you wish to visit this place. Got to go now still have to check this ceramic tile I’ve found earlier for our ongoing house renovation back home.
